New film ‘Still Alice” raises Dementia Awareness

The film Still Alice is released in Uk cinemas today. Julianne Moore plays the title role of a 50 year old professor who is diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, a form of Dementia.

Still Alice follows Alice and her family’s journey through the diagnosis and beyond. It focuses on how the different family members cope with the news and shows their reactions.

One scene in the film shows Alice writing notes and reminders on her iphone and on her blackboard at home, so that she can keep up to date with simple every day tasks and remind herself who her family are. The film highlights the real difficulties and dilemmas that people with Dementia face every day.

An article published by the BBC today, claims that 850,000 people in the Uk are currently affected by a form of Dementia. The term’Dementia’ is used to describe a set of symptoms that occur when the brain is damaged by certain diseases. The Alzheimer’s Society told the BBC, that by 2025, they predict 1 million people will be affected by a form of Dementia.
